George R. R. Martin was blown away by James Gunn’s Superman: the version I used to read about when I was a kid”
“I hope he gets to play Kal-El in another dozen movies,” Martin says of David Corenswet.

Although some critics insist on portraying ‘Superman’ as a box office failure, the reality is quite different: with more than $500 million already, it has more than doubled its budget, and counting. Most importantly, it sets the perfect starting point for James Gunn’s DC Universe, and there are more people happy with the film than unhappy with it. One of those who left the cinema delighted was George R. R. Martin, author of ‘Game of Thrones’.
“Supes and I are old friends, and this is one of the best Superman movies in a long time… maybe ever,” Martin wrote on his blog. “This new Superman reminds me of the version I used to read about when I was a kid, the strange visitor from another planet who came to Earth with powers and abilities far beyond those of mortal men. (And yes, an innocent, of course, he’s always been an immigrant. And an illegal immigrant, when you stop to think if it).”

Martin also elaborates, praising the individual performances of the main cast members. “The film looks great, and James Gunn did a great job with the casting,” Martin continues. “Rachel Bosnahan was terrific as Lois Lane; I’d say it’s between her and Margot Kidder for Best Lois Ever. And there’s no doubt whatsoever for the Best Lex. Nicholas Hoult was far and away the Best Luthor of All Time, a truly chilling villain. The kid in the cape was excellent as well. I hope he gets to play Kal-El in another dozen movies.”
What’s coming up from the DCU in 2025 and beyond
We won’t have to wait long to enjoy the next DCU production, as the second season of ‘The Peacemaker’ will be broadcast on HBO MAX this September, with the new trailer premiering this weekend. John Cena reprises his role as Christopher Smith in a season that promises to explain a lot about what was canon in the first season and what wasn’t.

But 2026 is also shaping up to be exciting, with the premiere of the first season of ‘Lanterns,’ starring Aaron Pierre as John Stewart and Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan, both members of the Green Lantern Corps. The highlight will come on June 26 with ‘Supergirl.’ It will be Milly Alcock’s debut in the role of Kara Zor-El, as well as Jason Momoa’s debut as Lobo.
