Sucker Punch

Ghost of Yotei’s protagonist is a woman, and the Onryō myth is the answer

Sucker Punch reveals that Japanese folklore was the driving force behind choosing Atsu as the main character.

Protagonista de Ghost of Yotei

Beyond its stunning visuals and innovative mechanics, Ghost of Yotei is making waves for its protagonist choice: Atsu, a female warrior inspired by the Onryō myth.

In Japanese folklore, Onryō are vengeful spirits, typically women who return from the afterlife to seek justice after suffering an unjust death. This deep-rooted cultural legend shaped Atsu’s character, making her more than just a representation of female protagonists—she embodies absolute justice.

The creative vision behind Atsu

In a recent interview with Variety, Ghost of Yotei’s co-directors Jason Connell and Nate Fox explained how Japanese folklore influenced Atsu’s creation.

Connell emphasized that the Onryō concept is central to the game’s narrative. These spirits are known for their relentless pursuit of vengeance, making Atsu the perfect embodiment of this ancient myth.

Atsu—more than just a hero

Atsu, later known as “The Onryō”, is a powerful protagonist who defies expectations.

While some players may question the choice of a female lead in an action game, Connell clarified that the decision was not about representation alone—it was about creating a character with deep symbolic meaning.

Rather than a traditional hero, Atsu is a vengeful force, driven by the unyielding determination of an Onryō spirit. She is justice incarnate.

A modern retelling of an ancient myth

With Ghost of Yotei, Sucker Punch is not just crafting a new action story, they are reinventing a legendary myth, presenting Atsu as a complex character who brings cultural depth to the game’s narrative.

Players will experience her journey firsthand when Ghost of Yotei launches on October 2, 2025, exclusively for PlayStation 5.
