Goodbye to buying second-hand, be careful when buying a used Nintendo Switch 2
A user discovered that his “open box” console was already bricked.
The launch of the Nintendo Switch 2 did not come without its details. And it is that the new anti-piracy measures, beyond reducing the intention of some users to get their games illegally, also make way for a worrying situation in this generation of consoles: systems that may become unusable, according to the most recent changes to Nintendo’s EULA.
Through Reddit, a user shared his bad experience buying a used Nintendo Switch 2. In his account, he comments that he found a Mario Kart edition at a Walmart, which was an “open box return.” Being a returned console, it was discounted, and in theory had already been serviced for resale. Also, since the Mario Kart World code had already been redeemed, he received an additional $50 off.
However, the problem came when he got home. After purchasing one of the new microSD cards needed to play, he turned on the console and finished the initial setup. It was then that the error message appeared: “Get home and go to finish the setup-quickly get Error Code 2124-4508. A quick Google search shows me I’m screwed. FML.”
The risk of buying second-hand consoles
Fortunately for the user, Walmart accepted the refund, so he was able to get his money back. However, this situation poses a new challenge: buying second-hand Switch 2 consoles could be risky if it is not possible to verify that the system is free of restrictions.
It is worth remembering that, when registering the console, the EULA for America states the following: “You acknowledge that if you fail to comply with the foregoing restrictions, Nintendo may render the Nintendo Account Services and/or the applicable Nintendo device permanently unusable in whole or in part.”
So PSA, if you’re going to buy a used Nintendo Switch 2, check it beforehand so you know you can still use it.
