Goodbye to remastering Zelda: The Wind Waker for Nintendo Switch 2? “All options are on the table”
The first GameCube games will be coming to Switch 2 for Nintendo Switch Online+Expansion Pack subscribers.

One of the star news items of the Nintendo Direct for Switch 2 was the announcement of the arrival of GameCube to the new console’s online service. Nintendo Switch Online+Expansion Pack subscribers will be able to enjoy games like SoulCalibur II, F-ZERO GX, or The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. The latter, which received a remastered edition on Wii U, has been reluctant to come out in this enhanced version, even though players have been asking for it for years. Many have wondered if the release of the port will finally bury this possibility, but Nintendo has already spoken about it and the news is not all bad.
Tim Gettys of the Kinda Funny Games podcast said he discussed the topic with Nate Bihldorff, Nintendo America’s vice president of product development, during the New York press event. “[We] got to ask a whole bunch of questions and, in typical Nintendo fashion, we didn’t get too many answers to things, but I did ask if having the Wind Waker on [Nintendo Switch Online] precludes [Nintendo Switch 2] from getting the actual Wii U port at some point, and he was very quick to say no. All options are on the table.”
The journalist acknowledged that nothing is confirmed, of course, but also noted that there are games on the Switch’s online service that are otherwise available via ports or remakes. Never say never.
What are the improvements in The Wind Waker HD?
The Wii U remaster features a significant increase in resolution, as the original version was only available at 480p. It also features improved lighting, new controls and gameplay enhancements that streamline navigation and more.
The port of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker will be available from the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2 on June 5th worldwide.
