GTA 6 physical disc may arrive “in the coming months,” as Rockstar clarifies current digital-only release

The current pre-order includes only a download code, but a traditional boxed release may arrive later.

GTA 6 Vice City Pack

This week, the announcement of the Grand Theft Auto VI pre-order cleared up one of the biggest questions about the game: its price. It also confirmed one of the biggest fears people had—that the game wouldn’t come on a disc. In fact, if you manage to get the physical version of the game, you’ll only find a download code inside. Rockstar Games is doing this to prevent leaks, but at the same time, the issue of preserving one of the most highly anticipated titles of the decade has sparked an outcry, leading to a backlash within the community.

In light of this, Rockstar has already issued a statement on the matter. Rockstar Support has replied to users who emailed with inquiries about disc versions of GTA 6, stating that “during the following months” we will have access to a physical version, not just a digital one. “Thank you for contacting Rockstar Support. Please note that the current pre-order is indeed just for a digital-only version; you will be able to purchase a physical copy in the coming months.”

There are some details in the email that raise questions, however. It mentions that a physical copy will be available in the coming months. There is, in fact, already a physical version in stores—the one that comes with a code on the box—and there is no specific mention of a disc. But for now, this is Rockstar’s official position.

A physical version could be released in December 2026

Meanwhile, a report from the Polish media outlet PPE.pl states that, according to information from the insider Graczdari, the disc-based version of GTA 6 could be released in 2026. The report states that this code-only version will only be sold around the release date, and “then we will receive a normal boxed version of the game—with a disc containing data that allows us to run GTA 6 without entering a key or linking it to our PlayStation or Xbox account.”
