Hackers follow through on threat against Insomniac Games, leaking over 1 million sensitive data

The story repeats itself once again following the massive leak of GTA VI. A week ago, the hacking group Rhysida claimed to have gained access to Insomniac Games’ servers and had obtained over 1.3 million files. After realizing that no one was going to pay the demanded 2 million dollars, they made a move and leaked all the files, nearly 1.7 TB of documents, images, and more, as reported by Cyber Daily. This includes information about Marvel’s Wolverine and other projects. Due to the criminal nature of this action, at MeriStation, we have decided not to go into detail about the content itself. What we can say is that the information includes sensitive employee data: tax reports, internal messages, passports, etc.

“Not sold [sic], the data has been uploaded, data hunters, enjoy,” says the message posted by the hackers. It appears that they have indeed sold some data, as they have uploaded 98% of the files within their possession, although the identity of the buyer has not been disclosed. The files were uploaded in three packages, each link appropriately labeled. Additionally, the leaks not only include documents but also design images and character models from the Wolverine and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 games.

One of the leaked documents is the agreement between Sony Interactive Entertainment and Marvel, signed by both Jim Ryan—still CEO of PlayStation—and Isaac Perlmutter of Marvel Entertainment. It was signed on July 26, 2021, and is a publishing agreement for Marvel’s Wolverine and two other games in the series, still without an official title.

A straightforward operation, according to the hackers

“Yes, we knew who we were targeting,” admitted a representative of Rhysida to Cyber Daily. “We knew that developers making games like this would be an easy target.” According to the group, obtaining the information was easy, as it took no more than 20-25 minutes to hack into the studio’s internal network. Sony, on its part, has announced that it is investigating the incident.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is the latest game from Insomniac Games. Released on October 20, the title has been acclaimed as one of the best of the year. The studio’s next production is in progress and is Marvel’s Wolverine, which still does not have a confirmed release date.
