Half-Life 3 is reportedly playable from start to finish: here’s what we know
Valve insider Tyler McVicker claims the long-awaited sequel is further along than ever before.

According to Tyler McVicker, Half-Life 3 is not only in development, but is already playable from start to finish. This marks a significant milestone, as previous attempts at a third installment never reached this stage.
McVicker also confirmed that Half-Life 3 will not be a VR title, unlike Half-Life: Alyx. Instead, it is being designed as a traditional first-person shooter, staying true to the franchise’s roots.
What we know about HLX
Valve has reportedly been working on a major Half-Life project under the codename HLX.
- The game is being widely playtested, leading to leaks from insiders.
- It is not procedurally generated, but will use a system similar to Left 4 Dead 2’s AI Director to dynamically adjust enemy placement and environmental elements.
- McVicker speculates that Chell from Portal may appear, though this remains unconfirmed.

Possible announcement and release window
McVicker suggests that Half-Life 3 could be announced in Summer 2025, with a Winter 2025 release. However, given Valve’s history of secrecy, fans should approach this information with cautious optimism.
Valve has yet to officially confirm the existence of Half-Life 3, but if McVicker’s claims are accurate, this could be the closest the franchise has ever come to a true sequel.
