HBO’s The Last of Us showrunner says spin-offs are a possibility
HBO is no stranger to creating spin-offs of their shows, either adaptation or not, and it seems like The Last of Us is not exempt from the idea.
It seems like spin-offs of HBO’s The Last of Us adaptation could happen, according to showrunner Craig Mazin. Although he doesn’t think he’d be the one behind them.
Speaking to The Wrap in an interview allowed by WGA guidelines, considering the guild is still on strike, Mazin revealed that while he and the co-creator of the video game franchise Neil Druckmann have not talked about it, he’s open to the idea of expanding the universe with spin-off series.
“We haven’t talked about that specifically because we’re so focused on just telling this main narrative. I’m not against the idea of other shows that may draw from these characters or that world,” said Mazin. “I don’t know how much more ‘The Last of Us’ I personally would be able to do. I mean, these shows are so big, I’m sort of burning one of the precious few remaining decades I have on telling this story. But in principle, I have no issue with it whatsoever. And I’m sure Neil would be interested as well.”
Of course, for any sort of additional story, the showrunner admits that it would have to make sense in the context of the main series. “My great hope is that if there is anything like that, that it’s done with as much care and respect and love as what we are applying to this series right now.”
The Last of Us: Season 2 on HBO… In 2026?
Be as it may, fans of the show will have to settle in for a long wait before being able to enjoy any sort of new content regarding The Last of Us. Francesca Orci, HBO’s Drama Chief, has confirmed that due to the writers’ strike (in this link We will tell you everything about it), caused by the conflict between creatives of the film and television industry and the threat of being replaced by studios with artificial intelligence, both The Last of Us Season 2 and other HBO projects were scheduled for 2025, although now “that’s a big question” and it is too soon to make a decision. Without a doubt, a splash of cold water for those who got excited after Pedro Pascal mentioned that filming was very close to starting.
