Rockstar Games
How long has it been between GTA trailers?
We will continue to wait for the second GTA 6 trailer no matter what.
December 5th will mark one year since the release of the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto 6 trailer, and since then we have heard nothing about the game. And although there are already theories that assume supposed clues about the release of the next trailer, we must remember that Rockstar Games has always acted hermetically. And one day it will decide to surprise us with an announcement about when its trailer will arrive.
The first trailer of GTA IV managed to break the Internet (well, that day YouTube went down) and since then the release of one of these trailers is something anticipated, both for the game and for what it can cause. This got us thinking about how long we had to wait between trailers for the most recent games in the franchise, the longest we had to wait between games.
Grand Theft Auto IV
Niko Bellic’s story was the one that gave us the leap to HD and showed us the best physics in the franchise. The GTA IV trailer campaign had a total of 4 trailers in a period of 1 year. The game was already announced and 17 years ago the industry looked different than it does today.
The first trailer, “Things Will Be Different,” is a inspired by the 1982 documentary Koyaanisqatsi, and with music by Phillip Glass, it raised the bar for what could be expected from a video game trailer, showing Liberty City as more than just a setting, but a living character. The trailer was released on March 29, 2007.
The second trailer, “Looking For That Special Someone,” gave us more details about Niko Bellic’s mission in Liberty City. This trailer was released three months later on June 28, 2007.
The third trailer, “Move Up, Ladies”, showed us the beginning of Niko and his cousin Roman’s American Dream, and was announced along with the presentation of the game’s cover. The trailer took longer to arrive and was released on November 28, 2007, 5 months after the previous one.
The fourth and last trailer “Everyone’s a Rat”, showing more game action and demonstrating part of the famous Euphoria engine. The trailer arrived almost a year after the first trailer, on March 27, 2008, one month before the game’s release on April 29 of the same year.
Grand Theft Auto V
The story of Michael, Franklin and Trevor takes us back over 11 years. The trailer strategy was very different from what we did with GTA IV, where we had 7 trailers over a 2 year period.
Trailer #1 of GTA V arrived on November 2, 2011, a Michael De Santa commented on his problems, why he chose to move to Los Santos, while we saw landscapes of this representation of Los Angeles. The trailer featured a mixture of a quiet and honest life, but also the madness that the series we are used to.
Trailer #2 took just over a year to arrive and was released on November 14, 2012. Michael was not the only main character, it showed us his family and the other two main characters, the crazy Trevor and the brave Franklin. The trailer ended by giving us the original release window, for Spring 2013.
5 months later, on April 30, 2013, Grand Theft Auto V had been delayed, but not 1, not 2, but three trailers were released, each focusing on one of the characters. Under the name “Michael. Franklin. Trevor.” we got a glimpse of what awaited us with each of these protagonists. At the end of each trailer we knew the new release date, September 17th.
On July 9, 2013, three months after the triple trailer, Rockstar did not release a trailer as such, but a video of how the gameplay of the game would be, explaining the mechanics of how we would change characters, some vehicles, and activities to perform throughout Los Santos, especially the famous heists in the story. The trailer would end with something that would catch the attention of the players, and that to date remains as the strongest piece of the studio, Grand Theft Auto Online.
Finally, Grand Theft Auto V got what was called The Official Trailer. It arrived 2 months after the last trailer and 3 weeks before its release. The trailer went more to the point of showing the chaos and destruction that awaited us in the game.
We can learn two details from this analysis. First, if we’re as lucky as we were with GTA V, the second trailer will arrive in December, so there’s no need to look at the moon or connect the dots just for the sake of it. On the other hand, once this trailer arrives, it’ll only be a matter of months before we get new content and information about the game between now and fall 2025, the launch window in which the game is expected to arrive on the Xbox X series and PlayStation 5.
