Is Matilda Weasley, Professor of Hogwarts Legacy, related to Ron Weasley?

With Hogwarts Legacy arriving on the previous generation consoles, one of the biggest lore questions of the game has risen once again: who’s Professor Matilda Weasley?

Update:
Is Matilda Weasley, Professor of Hogwarts Legacy, related to Ron Weasley?

The Harry Potter series wouldn’t be half as popular as it is had it not been for its enormous cast of colorful and endearing characters that surround the titular Harry, and arguably some of the most important there are in said books are the Weasleys. Of red hair and freckled faces, quirky attitudes and love for their own family and the wonders of the world, it’s hard to dislike the massive family, and with Ron Weasley being part of the main trio of heroes, it’s hard to pass them up for favorite character lists.

So when Hogwarts Legacy made its way to our hands, fans of the books were surprised to see that a new Weasley was featured so prominently: Professor Matilda Weasley, vice-headmistress of Hogwarts and teacher of the Transmutation class. But the game takes place over a hundred years before the events of Harry Potter, so what does it all mean?

Is Professor Matilda Weasey related to Ron Weasley?

As mentioned above, Hogwarts Legacy is set so long ago in the past of the Wizarding World that it’s capable of telling its own story with an entirely new cast of characters. Most of the recognizable names are simply there to catch the eye of longtime fans of the series, and this one isn’t an exception. There’s no evidence in-game that there is a direct relation between the two characters, but there are some things to note.

First of all, throughout the entire plot, there is no mention of Matilda Weasley being a mother or grandmother, so it’s not like there’s a certainty that she’s a direct blood ancestor to the Weasleys from the books and movies. There’s also no mention of her being wed to a member of said family, or of her having siblings or any extended family whatsoever. The best we could guess is that she’s some sort of great-great-aunt of the Weasleys from the original story, as her time period is so far removed from what we previously knew.

As an additional note, there has been no confirmation by the developers about a direct connection, nor was she ever mentioned in the author’s original or extended works. So while they could be related, we simply won’t know until the ones in charge decide to make it so.
