Update:

After Avengers: Endgame, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been in a tumultuous state. The quality of many productions has not been consistent, and the story’s cohesion and real-world hiccups have waned in recent years. However, with the upcoming Avengers films on the horizon, it is interesting to see how the films that will set the pace for the end of the saga are doing.

Early critical reactions to Thunderbolts*

Thunderbolts* hits theaters next week, and the team’s lineup may not include the famous Marvel characters you’d expect. Following the poor reception of Captain America: Brave New World in February, the second MCU movie of 2025 hopes to receive a better response from critics and audiences. Some are even saying that it’s one of the best Marvel movies in years.

Empire’s Amon Wamann wrote that “That was pretty great! A visually daring, emotionally resonant superhero film that pushes mental health to the forefront.” Meanwhile Jacob Fisher of Discussing Film mentioned “the cast has electric chemistry with each other (Florence Pugh & Lewis Pullman are the standouts) and the action sequences are very strong”.

Emily Murray of Total Film mentions that “is easily one of the best MCU movies in a long time. It has so much spark, charisma, and tells a genuinely emotional story you connect with”. For his part, Matt Neglia of Next Best Picture wrote, “It may not be the flashiest, funniest, or strongest Marvel film, but its rough edges and imperfections somehow all feel fitting for this anti-hero team of misfits.”

Thunderbolts* will be released in theaters on May 2.
