It’s official: God of War Laufey has a release date, and it won’t go head-to-head with GTA 6
The new title from Santa Monica Studio, starring Faye, will arrive on PS5 during the first quarter of 2027.
Sony has cleared up one of the major unknowns regarding its future schedule. God of War: Laufey will launch exclusively on PS5 on February 16, 2027—a date that allows Santa Monica Studio to avoid any direct competition with GTA 6, scheduled for November 19, 2026. There will be nearly three months between the two releases.

Announced during the State of Play event held last June, God of War: Laufey will be the next main installment in the series, although this time Kratos will step aside to make way for Faye, his wife and Atreus’s mother. The story will begin after his funeral, when the warrior unexpectedly awakens in the Everywhen—a sort of afterlife reserved for the gods, where creatures and deities from various mythologies coexist.
A key title on Sony’s schedule amid mounting pressure
Santa Monica Studio aims to preserve the core elements of the latest installments—with story, exploration, and brutal combat at the center—while giving Faye a considerably more agile fighting style. The protagonist will be able to chain together attacks on the ground and in the air, use the giants’ magic, and even separate the souls of certain enemies to continue attacking them. Deborah Ann Woll will reprise her role as the character, just as she did in God of War Ragnarök.

The announcement comes at a particularly sensitive time for PlayStation. Sony confirmed that it will stop producing physical discs for its new games starting in January 2028, a decision that has sparked strong opposition among collectors and preservation advocates. The discontent grew on the afternoon of Friday, July 24, when a global PSN outage left thousands of players unable to log in, access their console features, or play online. Services were later restored, although Sony did not publicly explain the cause of the outage.
