James Gunn further confuses fans with new DCU canon, laughs at Snyder's Justice League
The DC Studios director claims that almost everything from his ‘Peacemaker’ series is canon in his new universe, with the exception of “a few things.
James Gunn’s new DCU is about to kick off with ‘Creature Commandos’, his first animated series for DC, although it will not be until July 2025 that his new superhero universe really kicks off with the theatrical release of ‘Superman’, directed by Gunn himself and starring David Corenswet as the new cinematic Man of Steel. However, there are many doubts about what is canon and what is not canon in this new DCU, which was born out of the ashes of the previous and now defunct DCEU. Now, the filmmaker himself has added fuel to the fire by assuring IGN that only “some things” from the past DCEU will be canon, referring only to his series ‘Peacemaker’ and his movie ‘The Suicide Squad’, and ruling out - with a laugh - any possibility that the previous Justice League created by Zack Snyder will be canon.
James Gunn’s special canon in his DCU
And according to James Gunn himself, only that of the previous DCEU that is directly mentioned in ‘Creature Commandos’ will be canon, a series in which, according to its director, we will hear about events that took place in both ‘Peacemaker’ and ‘The Suicide Squad’. Sort of an a la carte canon in the service of James Gunn, who has deliberately decided what is canon and what is not, taking into account only his previous work for DC and discarding everything else.
Of course, this is a very controversial decision and one that the filmmaker will have to explain very well in his next superhero productions in order not to confuse even more a fandom that is already receiving all these revelations with suspicion. Although his statements become even more controversial when he refers to the Justice League of the DCEU as totally out of canon, when it was he himself who introduced the group of superheroes in the final cameo of ‘Peacemaker’, with Superman and Wonder Woman in the shadows and showing the faces of only Aquaman and Flash. And Batman? Who knows.
“The truth is almost all of ‘Peacemaker’ is canon, with the exception of (cough) the Justice League appearing. (Laughs) Which we will kind of deal with in the next season of ‘Peacemaker,’” the filmmaker laughingly declares. “Nothing for sure is canon unless you see it as part of ‘Creature Commandos’ forward for the DCU. Now, in ‘Creature Commandos’, you’ll hear them talk about things that happened in ‘The Suicide Squad’ or ‘Peacemaker,’ well then, those things automatically become canon,” Gunn concludes.
