James Gunn sets his sights on big star for his DC Universe: Tom Cruise or Chris Pratt

Gunn wants a big actor for the role of Superman’s biological father, with Tom Cruise currently the big favorite.

DCU Tom Cruise

James Gunn’s DCU has had a hard time getting off the ground, but this summer we will finally be able to enjoy its first production -at least live action, since ‘Creature Commandos’ is canon. However, there are still many roles to be defined, and the producer and director would have one reserved for a big Hollywood star, among which there are two names that sound with special force: Tom Cruise and Chris Pratt.

So says insider Jeff Sneider, who is always very well informed when it comes to superhero movies, not only DC, but also Marvel. Sneider believes that Gunn still has “big surprises for the casting of ‘Superman’,” and that the role planned for this big star would be that of Jor-El, the Man of Steel’s biological father, David Corenswet. Cruise, who signed a contract with Warner Bros. last year, could get offered a relevant role in Gunn’s DCU, even if he would not have too much screen presence.

The other name with which Sneider speculates is Chris Pratt, with whom Gunn has already worked in the ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ saga, but unlike Cruise, this seems unlikely. The reason is that Pratt’s future in the UCM is not yet completely closed, and Gunn and Kevin Feige -president of Marvel Studios- have a good relationship. Pratt has repeatedly confirmed that Star-Lord has not yet said his last word, and it is believed that he could be back, without going any further, in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’. Gunn would not want to hinder the filming of it, thus ruling out the possibility of having the actor not only from ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’, but from other blockbusters such as the recent ‘Jurassic World’ trilogy, ‘The Electric State’ or ‘Passengers’.

This is what the near future of James Gunn’s DCU looks like

This year we will already see two productions related to this new DC Universe. The next and most important is ‘Superman’, which we will be able to enjoy in theaters on July 11. Later, in the fall, the second season of ‘Peacemaker’ will premiere on MAX, which, unlike the first, will be canon. In 2026, both the movie ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’, with Milly Alcock, and the series ‘Lanterns’, with Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre, are expected to arrive.
