John Cena is clear about who the biggest action movie star is: “The greatest ass-kicker of all time with just a sentence per movie”

The debate over who is the greatest star in the history of action movies will never end. Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Tom Cruise, Chuck Norris... We could add dozens more names to that list, but one of today’s stars, John Cena, is crystal clear on the matter: “The greatest ass-kicker of all time with just a sentence per movie,” he said of the burly Austrian-born actor.

During the promotion for ‘Heads of State’ (available on Prime Video), Cena and Idris Elba discussed all of them, and the former WWE star added another name—this time of Asian descent. “My heart wants to say Jackie Chan. It does. He’s the greatest action star of all time. But then again… Arnold Schwarzenegger?” says Cena.

“No. I love you Arnold but you ain’t the goat of action stars. Action star right now, I’d say it’s Tom Cruise. Arnold, for example he just has one good phrase,” says Elba, bringing up the name of the ‘Mission: Impossible’ star. “This guy Tom Cruise does the entire action and you know he’s doing it himself.”

Cena responds. “(Arnold) has one good phrase per movie. This guy has developed a persona of being the greatest ass-kicker of all time with just a sentence per movie,” he begins. “I mean, Tom Cruise is getting paid a heck of a lot to hang off of space shuttles. If you break down Arnold’s hourly fee by the word, he says like three words.”

The fact is that despite his advanced age (78), Schwarzenegger’s legend will live on—and not just in any way, but with a new installment of one of the films that catapulted him to fame in the ’80s. The veteran actor will soon begin filming ‘King Conan’, in which we’ll obviously see a barbarian who’s getting on in years—a role Schwarzenegger himself has compared to ‘Unforgiven’, Clint Eastwood’s fantastic Western. “He’s a king and has become a bit complacent; he’s tired of the position and wants to move on. Check out Clint Eastwood’s movie ‘Unforgiven.’ It’ll be very similar to that, but with extraordinary battles,” he said recently.

What are John Cena’s upcoming projects?

Among John Cena’s upcoming projects, two stand out in particular. One is the comedy ‘Coyote vs. Acme,’ a hybrid of animation and live-action based on the classic Warner Bros. franchise. In it, he plays a lawyer working for the Acme Corporation in its legal battle against the Coyote, and it will be released on August 28.

Looking further ahead, we’ll see ‘Matchbox,’ based on the popular Mattel franchise, in which he’ll lead a cast that also includes Jessica Biel and Danai Gurira. This film will premiere a little later, but still this year—specifically on October 9.
