‘John Rambo’ prequel receives a release date and targets the 2027 blockbuster season

Lionsgate has confirmed the release date for ‘John Rambo,’ the next installment in the long-running action franchise centered on one of cinema’s most recognizable characters.

The prequel is scheduled to arrive in theaters on June 4, 2027. Its release places it in the summer blockbuster window, where it will compete for attention alongside other major titles such as ‘Star Wars: Starfighter’ and the live-action adaptation of ‘How to Train Your Dragon 2’.

A look back at Rambo’s origins

The film stars Noah Centineo as a younger version of the iconic soldier, a role previously defined by Sylvester Stallone across five films. The new film shifts focus to the character’s early years. Set during the Vietnam War, John Rambo explores the experiences that shaped the soldier long before the events of ‘First Blood’, offering a more introspective approach to his origins and psychological scars. Centineo is joined by David Harbour, who portrays Major Trautman, the military mentor central to Rambo’s development.

The film is directed by Jalmari Helander, whose previous work includes ‘Sisu,' and is written by Rory Haines and Sohrab Noshirvani, known for their collaboration on Black Adam. Although Stallone will not appear on screen, he remains involved as an executive producer; although it was considered the idea for him to reprise the role and use artificial intelligence to make him look younger than he did in the 1980s film.

Filming for ‘John Rambo’ has already wrapped.
