‘Joker: Folie a Deux’ director of photography denies the idea of it being a musical

Lawerence Sher has worked alongside director Todd Phillips on the Joker sequel, and he claims that Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga’s film is not a musical.

It seems like ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ will not actually be a musical, as was originally announced. Or so it appears from the latest statements of Lawrence Sher, director of photography of the film who worked alongside director Todd Phillips on the sequel of the celebrated ‘Joker’ with Joaquin Phoenix. The arrival of Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn opened the doors to a much more “musical” treatment for this sequel, something that was suggested practically since the announcement of its production. And this news was not received with much enthusiasm among fans, precisely. “It just has music” Sher said in a recent interview.

‘Joker 2′ will not be a musical

In ‘Joker’ music played a very prominent role in the film, enhancing its narrative and starring in some of the most memorable scenes. Now, it seems that Lawrence Sher points in the same direction, ensuring that the sequel is not a musical as such, thus contradicting previous statements that pointed in that direction, even citing ' One From the Heart, a musical by Francis Ford Coppola.

This is what he explained in an interview (via Cinemablend), in which the director of photography of ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ assures that “It’s got some music. It’s not a musical per say. But it just has music in it, that’s all. Music is a part of the movie and the characters, but I don’t know if it’s a musical. But there’s a lot of music in the first Joker as well.”

We will have to wait until October 4, 2024 to check in cinemas to what extent ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ maintains that announced musical spirit or if, on the contrary, a musical development similar to that of the first part has been chosen, as commented by Lawrence Sher.
