Legendary Hollywood star and beloved by 007 fans goes blind

Judi Dench is losing more and more of her sight due to macular degeneration.

Judi Dench

British actress Judi Dench has been one of the Best Supporting actresses in world cinema in recent years. The actress, who won an Oscar in 1999 for ‘Shakespeare in Love,’ one of the most controversial films ever to win the award, admitted on Trinny Woodall’s ‘Fearless’ podcast that her eyesight is getting worse. “I have to [have someone] now because I can’t see, I have to now because I can’t see, And I will walk into something or fall over [...] I’m always nervous before going to something,” the actress admitted.

Judi Dench admitted in 2012 that she has macular degeneration in one of her eyes. The disease has worsened as the actress has gotten older. However, it has not prevented her from being relevant in Hollywood, as the British actress received her last nomination for Best Supporting Actress for ‘Belfast’ in 2022. Quite a success story.

Problems working in recent years

Judi Dench, as a result of macular degeneration, has had more problems on film shoots. In an interview on “The Graham Norton Show” in 2023, the actress admitted that “learning scripts has become impossible” due to her illness. “You find a way of just getting about and getting over the things that you find very difficult. I’ve had to find another way of learning lines and things, which is having great friends of mine repeat them to me over and over and over again [...] I have to learn through repetition,” the actress said in an interview in 2021.

Judi Dench is highly regarded in Hollywood thanks to her roles in the aforementioned Shakespeare in Love and Belfast, as well as the James Bond saga. Not only did she work in the series of 007 films starring Daniel Craig, but she also worked alongside his predecessor, Pierce Brosnan.
