Logan’s director isn’t happy with Hugh Jackman’s return as Wolverine in Deadpool 3

James Mangold, director of Logan and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, would rather prefer Wolverine to have stayed dead than become a part of the MCU.

Update:
Hugh Jackman Lobezno Marvel

James Mangold, the director of the celebrated Logan and the upcoming Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, is not happy with the return of Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine in Deadpool 3, a film that will introduce the mutant universe in the MCU through multiverse shenanigans. This filmmaker stated as such in a recent interview in which he revealed that he would prefer that the story of that Wolverine in the cinema would have stayed where it was instead of this new return as part of the cast of the new Merc with a Mouth movie.

James Mangold directed Wolverine twice

Mangold has directed two Wolverine films with Hugh Jackman for Fox: the highly criticized The Wolverine, and the highly regarded Logan, the latter being the farewell to the character by his interpreter, as seen at the end of said film. However, almost a year ago we got the surprise news of his return to the iconic role as part of Deadpool 3 alongside Ryan Reynolds, in a video clip that will go down in history of entertainment. Now, the director assures that he wishes they’d “let it be,” in relation to the return of the actor after his end in Logan.

“I can’t say that there’s a part of me that doesn’t wish that we’d let it be,” he said in a recent interview with Variety. “But there was always going to be another Wolverine. There could be a baby Wolverine and a cartoon Wolverine. As much liquid as they can squeeze out of that rag, they’re going to try to. I don’t measure my success on a movie like ‘Logan’ with whether we ended the conversation. I ended my conversation.”

Even so, Deadpool 3 is scheduled to premiere in May 2024 after the last reshuffling of dates at Marvel Studios, advancing its release by several months. The film will have a star-studded cast led by Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman, Morena Baccarin, Leslie Uggams, Karan Soni, Brianna Hildebrand, Shioli Kutsuna, Stefan Kapicic, Rob Delaney, Emma Corrin, and Matthew Macfadyen.
