When talking about Bungie, one of the giants of the gaming industry, it’s impossible not to mention iconic franchises like Halo and Destiny. However, the U.S.-based studio, founded in 1991, has a rich history that includes titles like Oni and Marathon. Originally launched in 1994 as a trilogy, Marathon is now returning in a reimagined version, set to release on September 23, 2025. Players can already sign up for the closed alpha. The game will be available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.

What is Marathon?

Marathon is a sci-fi PvP extraction shooter set on the mysterious planet Tau Ceti IV. Players take on the role of cybernetic mercenaries known as Runners, each with unique abilities. Whether playing solo or in squads of three, players will explore a constantly evolving world filled with zones hosting up to 18 players and other threats. The goal is simple: collect resources, survive, and escape. If you die, you lose your equipment, making survival key for future incursions.

What makes Marathon unique?

One standout feature of Marathon is its superb gunplay, a hallmark of Bungie’s games like Halo and Destiny. The game promises tactical and dynamic combat, with Runners offering unique playstyles and the ability to create strategic compositions for deeper gameplay.

Designed for group play, Marathon allows players to revive teammates and escape with collected loot. For those confident in their skills, solo play is also an option, offering a chance to shine individually.

Runners available at launch

At launch, Marathon will feature six Runners, with four already revealed during the closed alpha:

  • Locus: The soldier, direct in combat.
  • Blackbird: Recon specialist, locates and punishes enemies.
  • Glitch: Agile destroyer, disrupts opposing teams.
  • Void: Stealth expert, uses smoke and active camouflage.

Every playthrough is completely different

Every match in Marathon is unique, thanks to dynamic events, variable weather, and the unpredictability of players. The game encourages adaptability and creativity in equipment compositions, ensuring endless possibilities.

Marathon promises an engaging endgame, featuring seasonal narratives, community events, and secrets to uncover. The first season will mark the beginning of what could be one of the year’s most notable releases, aiming to dominate the online gaming scene globally.

The game’s visual and artistic style, led by artist Joseph Cross, is already turning heads. However, in a competitive multiplayer landscape, Marathon faces challenges, especially as it’s not free-to-play—a factor that often raises concerns among players. Will Bungie’s expertise be enough to ensure the success of this revival? Time will tell.
