Marvel adds a fourth movie to its 2028 slate: are we headed for a superhero overload again?
Update:

Despite recent promises to scale back and refocus on quality, Marvel Studios has officially added a fourth theatrical release to its already packed 2028 calendar. The new untitled film is scheduled for December 15, 2028, joining three other Marvel movies already slated for February, May, and November.

This move has sparked debate among fans and industry watchers alike: is Marvel doubling down on the very strategy it said it would abandon?

A shift in strategy—or a placeholder?

Disney CEO Bob Iger recently acknowledged that Marvel had “lost a little focus by making too much,” emphasizing a renewed commitment to quality over quantity. Yet this fourth 2028 release seems to contradict that message.

It’s worth noting that Disney often reserves release dates far in advance, and not all of them materialize. Still, the addition of a December slot suggests Marvel is preparing for a major post-‘Secret Wars’ push, possibly to launch a new saga centered around the 'X-Men, 'Fantastic Four’, or long-delayed projects like Blade.

What could the four 2028 films be?

While none of the titles have been confirmed, speculation is swirling. Potential candidates include:

  • A ‘Fantastic Four’ sequel (following 2025’s ‘First Steps’)
  • ‘Black Panther 3′, which is already in development
  • The long-awaited X-Men’ reboot, rumored to be helmed by 'Thunderbolts* director Jake Schreier
  • A reworked ‘Blade’ film or even a ‘Doctor Strange 3′

Is four too many?

After a quieter 2026 and 2027, with just two films each year, 2028’s four-movie lineup feels like a return to Marvel’s pre-pandemic pace. But with superhero fatigue setting in for some audiences, the real question is whether Marvel can deliver four distinct, high-quality stories in a single year without oversaturating the market.

If each film brings something fresh—new characters, bold storytelling, or long-awaited payoffs—then fans may welcome the abundance. But if the studio slips back into formulaic territory, the backlash could be swift.
