After reviving Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in 'Top Gun: Maverick’, Tom Cruise is reportedly gearing up to bring back another iconic role from his early career: Cole Trickle, the hotshot NASCAR driver from ‘Days of Thunder’. While Cruise hasn’t made an official announcement, longtime collaborator Jerry Bruckheimer and NASCAR legend Jeff Gordon have both confirmed that a sequel is in development.

“We’re doing it”: Cruise’s return to the track

Speaking to Road & Track, Jeff Gordon shared that Cruise told him directly:

“We’re doing it. We’re doing ‘Days of Thunder 2.’”

Gordon, who was involved in the original film’s production through Hendrick Motorsports, added:

“Rick Hendrick is all in. The first film helped NASCAR grow in the ’90s, and I believe a sequel could do the same today.”

Bruckheimer echoed the excitement in a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight, saying:

“There’s always new technology and new ways to tell stories. Tom is full of phenomenal ideas. Once we pull it together, we’ll have something really exciting for audiences.”

What was ‘Days of Thunder’ about?

Released in 1990 and directed by the late Tony Scott, 'Days of Thunder’ followed Cole Trickle, a talented but reckless rookie who joins a NASCAR team led by Tom Daland (Randy Quaid) and crew chief Harry Hogge (Robert Duvall). After a brutal crash with rival Rowdy Burns (Michael Rooker), Trickle recovers with the help of neurosurgeon Claire Lewicki (Nicole Kidman), sparking both a romance and a comeback.

Though the film received mixed reviews at the time, it grossed over $150 million worldwide and has since become a cult favorite among racing fans.
