MindsEye becomes a meme magnet: Players compare its launch to Cyberpunk 2077’s disaster
Leslie Benzies’ highly anticipated open-world game stumbles out of the gate with bugs, crashes, and mounting backlash.

When MindsEye was first revealed, expectations were sky-high. After all, it’s the debut title from Build a Rocket Boy, led by Leslie Benzies, the former producer of GTA: San Andreas, and published by IO Interactive. But just days after launch, the game has become the butt of internet jokes, with players comparing its state to the infamous 2020 launch of Cyberpunk 2077.
What went wrong with MindsEye?
Despite a promising concept—a futuristic open-world adventure in the vein of Watch Dogs—the game has been plagued by technical issues across all platforms:
- Severe bugs: NPCs glitching through environments, vehicles merging into each other, and players falling through the map.
- Performance problems: Locked at 30 FPS on consoles, with frequent stuttering and crashes even on high-end PCs.
- Lack of polish: Critics and players alike describe the game as unfinished, with some calling it “unplayable” and demanding refunds.
Even with a day-one patch, the issues persist. Social media is flooded with clips of bizarre glitches, and MindsEye has earned a “Mostly Negative” rating on Steam.
A missed opportunity for a new IP
MindsEye wasn’t expected to rival GTA 6, but it was positioned as a solid stopgap for fans of open-world games. Instead, it’s become a cautionary tale.
Some players have even accused the studio of withholding review copies and padding early impressions with paid influencers, further fueling skepticism.
Can MindsEye recover?
The comparison to Cyberpunk 2077 isn’t just about bugs—it’s about broken trust. CD Projekt Red eventually turned things around, but it took years. Whether MindsEye can follow that path remains to be seen.

For now, it’s a $60 gamble that many players are choosing to refund. MindsEye is officially available now on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store.
If you’re feeling brave enough to dive in despite the bugs and memes, just make sure to install the day-one patch —it’s hefty (up to 45 GB on Xbox), but includes critical fixes for performance and stability.
