Not Robert De Niro or Al Pacino: this is the only male actor with three Oscars for Best Leading Actor
Daniel Day-Lewis holds a unique record in Academy Award history.

The Academy Awards don’t always align with cinematic history, often favoring emotional, uplifting films over darker narratives. However, one decision they got absolutely right was recognizing Daniel Day-Lewis as one of the greatest actors of all time, awarding him three Oscars for Best Actor.
Despite the legendary careers of Al Pacino and Robert De Niro, neither has achieved this feat.
Day-Lewis, now retired from acting, turns 68 today. Known for his method acting, he has portrayed a wide range of characters, fully immersing himself in each role.

Daniel Day-Lewis’s three Oscar-winning performances
- My Left Foot (1989) – His first Oscar came with his first nomination, portraying Christy Brown, a man with cerebral palsy who overcame immense challenges to become an artist. Day-Lewis’s commitment to method acting was so intense that he remained in character even off-camera.
- There Will Be Blood (2007) – Considered one of the greatest films of the 21st century, this psychological drama saw him play Daniel Plainview, a ruthless oil tycoon whose unchecked ambition leads to corruption and madness.
- Lincoln (2012) – His third Oscar came from his portrayal of Abraham Lincoln in Steven Spielberg’s historical drama, earning widespread acclaim for his meticulous performance.
Other Oscar nominations
Beyond his three wins, Day-Lewis was nominated for Best Actor three more times:
- ‘In the Name of the Father’ (1993)
- ‘Gangs of New York’ (2002)
- ‘Phantom Thread’ (2017)

Not the only actor with three Oscars
While Daniel Day-Lewis is the only male actor with three Best Actor wins, he isn’t the most awarded performer in Oscar history:
- Katharine Hepburn holds the record with four Best Actress Oscars.
- Frances McDormand follows with three Best Actress wins.
- Jack Nicholson also has three Oscars, but one was for Best Supporting Actor (‘Terms of Endearment’, 1983).
