Pikmin 4 shows off its gameplay in the latest Nintendo Direct

The latest Nintendo Direct gave Pikmin fans a cavalcade of news, from Pikmin 4 details to the surprise release of HD versions of older titles.

Update:
Pikmin 4

We’re getting close to the release of Pikmin 4, so Nintendo is finally ready to how it off to the public. And they did just that today during their latest Nintendo Direct by sharing our first look at gameplay and even giving us a release date.

After ten years since the last game, Pikmin 4 bring us closer to the exploration by pushing in the camera right behind your space explorer. Accompanied with Oatchi, a dog friend and good boy who’s capable of carrying items, smashing obstacles around the map, and helping you survive in many other ways, you’ll be tasked with exploring a planet to find its treasures and fix your ship, and at the same time rescuing castaways.

For the first time ever in the series you’ll also be able to set out in nighttime expeditions, with the promise that monsters will become more aggressive, and an entirely new species of Pikmin will be there to help you survive. This time they seem to be made almost entirely of light, so they’ll only be able to come out in the darkness.

Nintendo shared the following about Pikmin 4 on the game’s official website:

“Welcome to the Rescue Corps. In this game, you are the newest recruit, and you’ll customize your character before setting off to meet the capable Rescue Pup Oatchi and the plant-like creatures called Pikmin. New to the series? Don’t worry – this is a great entry point for anyone that wants to learn more about Pikmin. Collect treasures around the planet to fix the Rescue Corp’s spaceship’s radar and open new areas to explore, including underground caves, where a completely different environment from the surface awaits.”

“Pikmin 4 also features Dandori Battles – try to collect more objects than your opponent within the time limit to win and save the castaway. Plus, for the first time in the Pikmin series, you can eventually set out for night expeditions. But nightfall sends creatures into a frenzy, so stay alert. Thankfully, you’ll come across the new Glow Pikmin to drive them away. Much more awaits on this uncharted planet.”

Pikmin 4 will release on July 21, 2023 exclusively on Nintendo Switch. A demo for the game will also be available on the eShop from June 28 onwards. Additionally, HD versions of the first two Pikmin games in the series, which were originally released on GameCube, have been released for purchase on the eShop.
