For some time now, it has been leaked in the media that Ryan Gosling was in talks to star in the new ‘Star Wars’ movie directed by Shawn Levy (‘Deadpool & Wolverine’), which Lucasfilm has officially confirmed. During the Star Wars Celebration in Tokyo, the Disney-owned company announced that the film will be titled ‘Star Wars: Starfighter’ and will be released on May 28, 2027, one year after ‘The Mandalorian & Grogu’ hits theaters worldwide. Gosling has also been confirmed to star in the feature film, which will take place after the events of ‘Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker’.

Ryan Gosling appeared on the screen and uttered one of Han Solo’s mythical lines: “Never tell me about the odds.” He then added: “Being here and seeing all of you [makes it] more inspiring to do it. There’s so much creativity and imagination in this room and there’s so much love. It’s such a great reminder of how much movies can mean to us, specifically how much these movies mean to us. The force is a mysterious thing, but, as I’m here, the force is the fans. All we can hope for is, ‘May the fans be with us.’” Shawn Levy, meanwhile, has assured that they too are fans of the saga. “There’s obviously a relationship between these stories and the audience, but we’ve spent our lives in that audience. We know how meaningful it is.”

Star Wars: Starfighter’ is a standalone movie set about five years after ‘Episode IX’. Most of the characters will be new, although Kathleen Kennedy left the door open for the possible presence of some of the main characters from the sequels. According to Variety, Jonathan Tropper (‘The Adam Project’) has written the script and shooting is expected to begin this fall.
