Sarah Michelle Gellar breaks her silence on the cancellation of the ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ sequel and lashes out at Hulu
The actress points to an executive at the streaming platform as the reason the series won’t move forward.

Sarah Michelle Gellar, best known for playing Buffy Summers in ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’, has spoken for the first time about the cancellation of the highly anticipated reboot of the series, making no attempt to hide her deep disappointment with the way Hulu handled the decision. The project, which had been in development for several years with director Chloé Zhao, was unexpectedly canceled even after a pilot episode had already been filmed.
As the actress explained to People, the news couldn’t have come at a worse time. Gellar received the call informing her that the streaming service wouldn’t be moving forward with the series just before she was set to take the stage at the SXSW Film & TV Festival to present her new movie, ‘Ready or Not 2: Here I Come’. “Nobody saw this coming. And it’s also the weekend of Chloé going to the Oscars as a best director nominee for Hamnet. For them to call us on the Friday of what should have been Chloé’s victory lap for an incredible film, and my world premiere of something that I worked very hard for is… that says something,” Gellar said.
The actress also noted that working on the sequel series was never easy, since one of the Hulu executives kept bragging that he wasn’t a fan of the original series and hadn’t even watched it all the way through. “We had an executive on our show who was not only not a fan of the original, but was proud to constantly remind us that he had never seen the entirety of the series and how it wasn’t for him,” she said.
