Sony Pictures

Spider-Man spin-off movie ‘El Muerto’ confirmed dead and buried by Bad Bunny

El Muerto had disappeared from Sony Pictures’ release schedule a few months ago, but now its would-be star has gone ahead and confirmed its cancelation.

El Muerto

Well, it seems like ‘El Muerto’ is more dead than expected. The Spider-Man spin-off that Sony Pictures was preparing died before entering production, a suspicion that had been roaming around since the company announced it had been removed from its calendar. The confirmation comes from the hand of its protagonist, singer Bad Bunny (Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio), who in an interview with Variety has confirmed that the film has been canceled.

When the journalist asked him about the issue, the artist hesitated, but then began to speak: “I don’t know what to say,” he responded. He added that the issue is “delicate” and immediately afterward, his publicist —Sujeylee Solá— pointed out that the movie “Obviously, it’s out.”

Far from the superheroes and villains of Marvel, the singer has announced that his next film could be a very different project: “As a movie consumer myself, I’m not one to watch a lot of action movies. I’d even say it’s my least favorite genre. I would really like to play other kinds of things, like a little bit more drama, romance too, or comedy” or perhaps “a history movie with a little action in it.”

Who is El Muerto?

A smaller character within the Spider-Man universe, originally a villain who first appeared in the sixth issue of ‘Friendy Neighborhood Spider-Man’, back in 2006. Juan Carlos Estrada Sánchez, the true identity of the character, is an expert wrestler who almost managed to uncover the identity of the wall-crawler. However, he came to ally himself with him to fight against Dorado, another fearsome luchador villain.

When ‘El Muerto’ disappeared from the Sony Pictures calendar, only Kraven the Hunter and Madame Web remained, both of which had already been filmed and were in the post-production process. Unlike most productions based on these superheroes, which are in the hands of Marvel Studios, the film rights to Spider-Man and its spin-offs belong to Sony. Jonás Cuarón, son of Mexican director Alfonso Cuarón, had been chosen to direct the feature film starring Bad Bunny.
