Take-Two and Remedy enter legal battle over company logo

The new logo from the makers of Max Payne and Alan Wake has caught the attention of Rockstar’s parent company because of its apparent similarity.

Take-Two and Remedy enter legal battle over company logo

GTA publisher Take-Two has filed a trademark dispute over Alan Wake and Control developer, Remedy’s logo, as reported by RespawnFirst.

This trademark dispute is presented by the letter ‘R’

This litigation began in May 2023, when Take-Two Interactive filed two trademark lawsuits against Remedy Entertainment. While the two logos are somewhat similar, with a capital R as part of the design, the different fonts and elements make them very different. However, according to Take-Two Interactive, the new Remedy logo “creates a likelihood of confusion in the minds of the public” with the Rockstar Games logo.

This comes as little surprise from Take-Two, a company with a history of trademark and copyright lawsuits. In 2021, they got Hazelight Studios, developers of Game of the Year It Takes Two, to drop the trademark because they claimed that consumers might confuse their company with the game’s title. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Meanwhile, we’ll have to see what this lawsuit means as Remedy works on the remakes of Max Payne 1 & 2, which are being funded by Rockstar Games.

A change of logo by Remedy

Remedy’s new logo has been around for a while, as it was part of a visual identity refresh unveiled last April. At the time, Remedy said the change was part of its “evolution over the years” as a studio. “The bullet in the letter R in the old logo represented the era of Max Payne, but the Remedy of now is much bigger than a single game; we have a portfolio of games, new and old,” they wrote in a press release.

“It was time to update and redefine our visual identity to bring more consistency, showcase our evolution over the years, and better express our vision of today’s Remedy. The Remedy logo means a lot to us, but we know it also means a lot to you. Like the games we create at Remedy, we approached this process with great care, consideration and a lot of passion!”
