The director of 'Casino Royale' preferred Henry Cavill for the role of James Bond
Matthew Vaughn, director of ‘Argyle’, says the director of ‘Casino Royale’ preferred Cavill to Daniel Craig.
In recent years, there has been no end of talk about who will be the next James Bond in the movies, with names like Idris Elba -self-discarded- or Henry Cavill, who has already admitted that it is a desire, coming to the fore. However, it should not be difficult if he was about to get the role 18 years ago, when ‘Casino Royale’ was released.
This was assured by Matthew Vaughn, who directed Cavill in the recent ‘Argyle’ and who was in the studios where the casting for this film was held, telling a curious anecdote that could end with the actor wearing the suit and tie of the British secret agent. A few months ago, Martin Campbell, the director, assured that he was more convinced by Craig’s audition, but according to Vaughn, it was not really like that.
“When Henry was auditioning for Bond, I was at Pinewood [Studios], and Daniel was as well, at the same time,” Vaughn says in a joint interview with the actor. “I’d go off and meet with Daniel, and he’d say what’s going on. “He says there’s this young guy Henry Cavill I think they’re seeing as well. And we hadn’t done ‘Stardust’ (2007) yet. But that’s how you came into my radar.”
“I know that the director preferred your audition, but Barbara [Broccoli] preferred ‘Layer Cake’ (Daniel Craig’s 2004 movie). So, just to let you know,” he continues. “And they decided you were too young. And I probably shouldn’t have said that, but the Broccolis aren’t that keen on me anyway, so what have I got to lose?”
Henry Cavill’s busy schedule
Cavill is going to be very busy in the next few years, even after he retires from Netflix’s ‘The Witcher’ and the DC Universe. It’s not Pedro Pascal’s, but the English actor’s schedule has a few dates coming up. This year he will be seen in Guy Ritchie’s new film ‘The Ministry of Unglentlemanly Warfare’, but he will also star in the reboot of ‘Highlander’ with ‘John Wick’ director Chad Strahelski. In addition, he has yet-to-be-defined projects (it is unknown if it will be a series, a movie, or both) based on the Warhammer universe, of which he has confessed to being a big fan on several occasions.
