The discovery at Gene Hackman’s home following the actor’s mysterious death

The film star passed away shortly after his wife, but the causes of their deaths have now been clarified.

Gene Hackman

In February, police discovered the bodies of Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, at their Santa Fe, New Mexico home. Initially, investigations focused on the mysterious circumstances surrounding their deaths. Authorities later revealed that the property was infested with rodents and debris, though the main residence where the couple lived was clean and free of rodent activity.

According to the New Mexico Department of Health via CNN, rodent droppings were found in three garages, two small houses, and three sheds. Investigators also discovered a live rodent, a dead rodent, and nests in the garages. Despite the infestation in outbuildings, the main house posed a low risk of exposure.

Arakawa’s death linked to rodent-borne infection

Betsy Arakawa died from hantavirus, a pulmonary infection transmitted through rodent droppings. Dr. Heather Jarrell, the medical examiner, noted that the risk of contracting the virus at the property was low.

Investigators determined that Gene Hackman died days later from natural causes related to cardiovascular issues. The actor, known for films like ‘The Conversation’, ‘Mississippi Burning’, and ‘Superman’, passed away at the age of 95. Hackman had been retired from acting for years and suffered from Alzheimer’s disease, which contributed to his declining health.
