HBO

The Last of Us Season 2 makes this small but sad change

A detail that emphasizes Ellie’s loneliness.

The Last of Us

Last week, The Last of Us Season 2 broke our hearts, (or broke them again if played the video game in 2020). The meeting between Joel and Abby was already destined, and with it came the catalyst that kicks off this story. To rub salt in the wound, HBO also introduced a small change that you probably didn’t notice.

Warning: Spoilers for The Last of Us Season 2 ahead.

Joel’s death was one of the most painful in video games, and now on television. Although his death was more graphic in the game, the outcome was the same. Episode 3 showed us the aftermath of what happened to Jackson and how life goes on for some. However, if you were paying attention during the opening credits, there was a special change.

A small change in the opening credits of The Last of Us

Since Season 1, the opening sequence has been full of symbolism: the Cordyceps spreading throughout the world, and at the end, a pair of silhouettes - representing Joel and Ellie - walking on the journey they took in Season 1.

Episode 3 of Season 2 of The Last of Us, however, makes a small change. With Pedro Pascal’s character no longer with us, the smaller silhouette now appears to be all alone. While Ellie is not completely alone on her revenge trip to Seattle, the loss of Joel as a presumed character is too big for other characters to fill.
