The new Resident Evil: Veronica—the remake of Resident Evil: Code: Veronica—was one of the biggest surprises at Summer Game Fest 2026. Chris and Claire Redfield will once again relive the nightmare of Rockfort Island and the Umbrella facilities in Antarctica in 2027, and Capcom has already hinted that there will be a major change in the new version compared to the original title. According to the Japanese company, the zombies in the first section of the game will move in large groups, which could radically alter the gameplay.

A Radical Shift in Gameplay? Capcom Hints That the Zombies in Resident Evil Veronica Will Be More Dangerous Than Ever

In a post across the series’ official social media channels, Capcom has dropped a very interesting detail about the new Resident Evil Veronica, the highly anticipated remake of Resident Evil — Code: Veronica (2000), set to be released sometime in 2027. As revealed by the creators of Resident Evil, the zombies on Rockfort Island tend to move in groups, a stark contrast to the isolated zombies seen in Raccoon City, which has already sparked speculation and theories among fans.

Accompanying the post is an official image from the game in which we can indeed see a large group of prisoners and Umbrella employees infected with the T-Virus moving in a crowd. However, it doesn’t seem that this post is simply intended to expand the lore of the new game; rather, everything points to it introducing a significant change in the gameplay of Resident Evil Veronica compared to the original title.

The implications are clear: Veronica would be much more action-oriented than Code: Veronica. The larger number of enemies—who also move in groups—would require us to use more firepower than usual—perhaps even explosive or incendiary devices—just to survive the carnage. Furthermore, given that most of the environments on Rockfort Island were very narrow—there were many corridors and building interiors—these encounters would be practically unavoidable.

Of course, we understand that this new feature would be carefully calibrated so that not every encounter with zombies would be like this, to avoid wearing out the formula too quickly. Perhaps they’re limited solely to the Rockfort Island section—as the original post suggests—but it’s also worth noting that, aside from basic zombies, Claire and Chris also faced all kinds of T-Virus offshoots, such as zombie dogs, the lethal Hunter IIs, the Bandersnatches, and bosses like Nosferatu.

In any case, we’ll still have to wait until 2027 to see how Resident Evil Veronica differs from the original 2000 game—not only in terms of narrative but also in terms of gameplay. The concept of facing hordes of zombies at once seems more in line with Dead Rising—also from Capcom—than with Resident Evil, but it remains to be seen how this mechanic will be implemented... and how it will affect the progression of the adventure.
