Dragon Ball

The most sadistic side of ‘Dragon Ball Z’ showed Cell killing Chi-Chi and Piccolo in front of Gohan, but there’s a catch

The anime gave us a wild filler sequence never before seen in the manga during Goku and Gohan’s training in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber.

Anime provides the ideal framework for expanding the original stories of the manga on which it is based, and ‘Dragon Ball’ is no exception. As with other series, such as ‘One Piece,’ ‘Naruto,’ and the true king of filler, ‘Detective Conan,’ the TV series starring Goku and company expanded its universe through scenes, chapters, and filler arcs that were never seen in the manga. Whether to offer more footage to fans or to give the original author — in this case, Akira Toriyama — more time to finish the source material, ‘Dragon Ball Z’ offered hours of exclusive sequences. One of these sequences was especially sadistic: Goku’s nightmare with the androids as protagonists, in which Gohan dreams that Cell brutally murders his mother, Chi-Chi, and Piccolo in front of him, leaving him unable to intervene.

Gohan’s wildest nightmare

In the episode of ‘Dragon Ball Z’ in which Cell announces the famous martial arts tournament to decide the future of humanity, both Goku and Gohan continue training inside the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, where a year inside is equivalent to a day outside. With Gohan already consolidated as a Super Saiyan, a scene as surprising as it is violent takes place. So much so that suddenly Chi-Chi, Gohan’s mother, enters the space outside of time and space to scold her son for putting aside his studies and focusing only on fighting and becoming more powerful.

In turn, Piccolo enters the scene apologizing to the boy’s mother for encouraging Gohan to train more and more instead of studying. However, something terrible is about to happen; behind Chi-Chi descends a figure known to all: Cell in his perfect form. Suddenly, the android delivers a deadly slap that leaves Goku’s wife lifeless, all in front of Gohan’s blocker for watching such a sadistic scene. Piccolo then lunges at Cell, falling moments later to the ground with his eyes rolled back in his head, also lifeless.

Cell descends to land on Piccolo’s limp body, with one of his feet on his head. And this is when the most atrocious moment of the scene takes place: with Gohan running towards Piccolo, Cell stomps hard on the skull of the Namekian, smashing it to pieces; and although the shot of the scene hides such a terrible act, it can be clearly seen and heard. And it seems that Cell does the same to Chi-Chi before Gohan’s cries of despair.

Suddenly, Goku burst onto the scene, waking his son from what seemed like a terrible nightmare—and it was. According to Goku, Gohan has been pushed to his limit, leaving him exhausted and feverish. The young Super Saiyan had an atrocious dream about Cell, although he could never have dreamed of Cell in his perfect form because he had yet to see him at that point in the story. Nevertheless, it seems as if Gohan imagines Cell stepping on heads by way of a premonition. After all, it was Cell’s very act on Android 16 that unleashed his Super Saiyan level 2.
