Rockstar Games

The only person who could play GTA 6, but refuses to because “they’re not a gamer” and their role is something completely different

Despite being the most awaited title, his work is different.

Grand Theft Auto VI

These days, the wish of many millions of video game fans is for May 2026 to arrive so they can finally play GTA 6 after years of waiting. And except for the development team at Rockstar Games, there is someone who could play it already but hasn’t. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick recently explained why he hasn’t played the upcoming open-world game.

In a recent interview with CNBC, Zelnick discussed his experience with the game, stating that his role as CEO entailed different objectives.

I’m not a gamer, not a lot - I don’t play video games; I’m not the consumer-in-chief,” commented Zelnick. Moving on to the next question about whether he has seen any of the game and what feedback he has given, he mentioned that he shares his opinions pretty openly. “I think being the consumer-in-chief in the entertainment business as the CEO is probably a mistake,” he added. “I wasn’t the consumer-in-chief in the movie business or the television business or the music business, even though I certainly could read a script and I definitely love music… But that’s not my role. My role is to attract, retain, and motivate the best talent in the business and then getting out of their way.

GTA VI: the best thing anyone’s ever seen in entertainment

Earlier in the interview, Zelnick discussed the reasons for the delay of GTA VI, defending it as part of Rockstar Games’ vision to create one of their best products yet. “It’s a pretty short delay; it’s less than six months. Generally, when we announce a date that’s certain, we’re able to hit that date,” Strauss Zelnick said. “But the key is that Rockstar Games is trying to create the best thing that anyone’s ever seen in entertainment—not just interactive entertainment. Consumers have huge hopes for the title.”

Grand Theft Auto VI is set to release on May 26, 2026, for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, unless another delay occurs.
