There will not be a remake of Chrono Trigger; it was all a misunderstanding in the translation

A panel with Horii at the convention sparked rumors of a remake, but it was all a misunderstanding.

Chrono Trigger is one of the most iconic titles of the ’90s. It was a standard-bearer of the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) era and an icon in the history of video games. Despite having all the checks of a classic that every generation should play, this Square masterpiece has largely been forgotten. However, a spark of hope was lit—and quickly extinguished—this weekend due to a translation error in a panel featuring Yuji Horii, the game’s screenwriter.

During Comi-Con Naples, Yuji Horii—creator of the Dragon Quest franchise and writer of Chrono Trigger—participated in a panel. A misinterpretation of his words during the panel implied that the classic RPG would be remade for current gaming consoles. The rumor gained strength on Reddit when an attendee shared the information. However, Gematsu debunked the rumor after reviewing the official video of the event on Twitch. They clarified that a remake was never mentioned and that the error came from the interpreter’s translation of one of Horii’s answers.

The Legacy of Chrono Trigger

Considering that 2025 will mark the game’s 30th anniversary, it’s no wonder this rumor has received so much buzz. Although there are currently no official plans for a remake, Square Enix confirmed in March of this year that it will reveal more information about new projects related to the Chrono Trigger universe that will “go beyond the world of the game.” However, no further details were offered, leaving the announcement in the realm of speculation.

Chrono Trigger is currently a difficult game to find. Since its original release on SNES in 1995, it has had few re-releases. These include a PlayStation version released alongside Final Fantasy IV under the name Final Fantasy Chronicles, an enhanced edition for the Nintendo DS, and ports for PCs and smartphones.
