This is the failure that hurt and depressed Schwarzenegger the most: “It hurt me, it’s embarrassing”

James Cameron said it was the only time he’d ever seen him down.

Arnold Schwarzenegger

Arnold Schwarzenegger had just come off the massive success of Terminator 2, released in 1992. He reunited with John McTiernan, the director of Predator, which hinted at another potential hit. However, Last Action Hero failed at the box office, and it ended up taking a toll on the actor, who felt his ego had taken a hit.

“I can’t tell you how angry I was,” Schwarzenegger admitted in a documentary. “It hurts. It hurts your feelings. It’s embarrassing.”Last Action Hero is a 1993 film that follows the story of Danny Madigan, a young fan of Jack Slater, the biggest action movie hero. A movie theater usher gives him a magical ticket, and the boy is transported into the screen to live adventures alongside his idol.

James Cameron had never seen him so discouraged

James Cameron, director of Terminator, shared how he found the actor during that period:

“He sounded like he was crying in bed. He took it as a hard hit to his brand—I think it really affected him.”The Titanic director asked what he was going to do next, and Schwarzenegger told him he just wanted some time alone.“It’s the only time I’ve ever heard him that down,” Cameron said.

Fortunately, Schwarzenegger’s career wasn’t derailed, and it has continued steadily over the following decades.
