Toriyama resolved one of the biggest challenges at the end of ‘Dragon Ball’ using simple earrings
The creator of Goku’s adventures needed a new fusion method and had a brilliant idea: turning ordinary jewelry into something mystical.
‘Dragon Ball’ has given us truly unforgettable moments across its many story arcs, but one such moment involves the final stretch of ’Dragon Ball Z’ and the emergence of a fusion both unexpected and highly anticipated: Vegito. This ultimate warrior came to life through the union of Goku and Vegeta with the Pothala earrings. Faced with a real challenge to create a new fusion method beyond the Fusion Dance used by Goten and Trunks to form Gotenks, Toriyama chose to imbue the earrings with mystical significance instead of leaving them as mere adornments.
The creation of Pothala earrings fusion
This is how the mangaka explained it in an interview published in Dragon Ball Daizenshuu 6. He revealed that the Pothala earrings were originally just ornaments worn by the Supreme Kais. However, when the need arose for a new technique or fusion method, Toriyama saw these secondary elements as the perfect opportunity to transform them into essential objects within ‘Dragon Ball.’
“I was wondering what I should do; I had always been drawing earrings [on Kaiōshin], so I thought, ’perhaps I can use these‘... [Until then], they were just for decoration,” Toriyama explained at the time, once again demonstrating how he improvised as he worked to meet the demanding deadlines of the manga.
This led to the development of a new fusion method tied to the Supreme Kais, rather than a more earthly technique like the Fusion Dance. Toriyama also admitted that moments of uncertainty allowed him to be more creative and surprise readers with new elements that further enriched his universe.
