We want movies made in America, again!” This was the conclusion of Donald Trump‘s message on Truth Social, his social network, announcing 100% tariffs on foreign films released in North America. The president has not specified how he will achieve this goal, but he has made it clear to all current productions outside the United States that they are on notice.

I am authorizing the Department of Commerce, and the United States Trade Representative, to immediately begin the process of instituting a 100% Tariff on any and all Movies coming into our Country that are produced in Foreign Lands,” Trump declared. The main idea is to protect the country’s film industry, after Trump admitted that “the Movie Industry in America is DYING a very fast death.” The president has not explained how or when these tariffs will be implemented. This announcement comes shortly after the start of the trade war with China the reopening of Alcatraz prison, and the publication of an artificial intelligence-generated message congratulating the ‘Star Wars’ day.

The first reactions

Gavin Newsom’s team, the Democratic governor of California, has assured that Donald Trump “has no authority to impose tariffs.” On the other hand, film director Steven DeKnight has responded more forcefully to the announcement. “How the actual fuck do you put a tariff on a movie? Double the price of a ticket? Instead of this pudding-brained approach, how about offering incentives to shoot here like every other country in the world? What a fucking idiot,” he wrote on X.

These are films that may be affected

According to CultureCrave, a variety of projects aimed at U.S. audiences are currently filming overseas for various reasons. One such film is ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ which will be in theaters this summer. The long-awaited film marks the Avengers’ return to the big screen and features Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Hemsworth. Other films shooting outside the U.S. include Christopher Nolan’s mega-project ‘The Odyssey,’ the fourth installment of James Cameron‘s ‘Avatar’ saga, and ‘Supergirl’.

Donald Trump’s announcement comes a week before the Cannes Film Festival, when many of the country’s films are marketed to foreign production companies. At the beginning of his term, the president appointed actors Sylvester Stallone, Mel Gibson, and Jon Voight as Hollywood ambassadors. Voight met with the Republican president to “make Hollywood great again.”
