Dragon’s Dogma 2 is barely more than a week from release, but already players can begin testing what’s to come thanks to the game’s character creator having released as a free demo. And while many fans have already made good use of it, even sharing some amazing (and also creepy) character designs, one small detail has some players scratching their heads: Monikers

As part of the creation process, players are able to name their characters and pawns in the demo, which will then be available to use once the full game launches, should they want to use one of the designs they’ve made. However, right below the Name option, all characters have a second input they must fill to complete the naming process, “Moniker”. We’ll try to explain what it is and what it’ll be used for.

What is a moniker in Dragon’s Dogma 2?

In Dragon’s Dogma 2, a moniker is a nickname for your player character and main Pawn that is used as a sort of censorship by the game itself, in case their given name is something rude or inappropiate. If the game detects a name includes offensive language, then it’ll show their chosen moniker to present itself in other player’s games.

When creating a character you get to input whatever name you want, but must also choose a Moniker from a predetermined list Capcom has chosen. For example, you may name your hero “John Dogma”, but if the name wasn’t very appropriate then you’d appear in other player’s games as the nickname you’ve chosen from the list.

Does this mean that Dragon’s Dogma 2 has multiplayer?

Unfortunately, no. This is instead a measure that Capcom has put in place to protect players from offensive language in the Pawn system that will form an integral part of the game. While Dragon’s Dogma 2 has no formal multiplayer modes (neither cooperative nor competitive), the upcoming RPG makes use of online servers to let players hire other players’ personal Pawns.

These guys

In the same way as in the original game, Pawns are meant to accompany the game’s hero, the Arisen, and learn from the adventures you have with them. They can learn where certain treasure spots are, a monster’s weakness after finding it, certain tactics and when to apply them, and more depending on what you experience with them in your party. Then, they’re able to travel through “rifts” into other worlds, to help other players and get rewards. It is an extremely interesting mechanic that set the original Dragon’s Dogma apart from other RPGs from the era, and it’s back bigger and better than before.

Dragon’s Dogma 2 will release on March 22, 2024, on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC through Steam. Don’t forget to read our preview right here
