What to Expect from Sony’s State of Play of January 2024: duration, confirmed games and more

The first State of Play showcase of 2024 takes place today, and if you’re wondering what you could expect from the show, here is everything we know so far.

Update:
State of Play 2024 PlayStation PS5

Microsoft opened up the year with its very own Xbox Developer Direct, and while that was incredibly exciting, now it’s time for PlayStation players to get excited about what’s to come to their platforms in 2024. The first State of Play showcase of the year is today, with 40 minutes of announcements, trailers, and updates on new and upcoming titles for PS5 and PS VR2.

However, the company has only confirmed three of those titles as being featured in the show, with the rest being a slight mystery. Below you’ll find everything we know about this new State of Play.

When is the first State of Play of 2024 taking place?

The State of Play will take place January 31, 2024 at 2pm PT, and as mentioned above it’ll take up almost a full hour with content, news, and release dates for some of the biggest games coming to PlayStation 5 in 2024. The rest of the world will be able to watch at the following time:

  • 5:00 PM ET
  • 4:00 PM CT
  • 2:00 PM PT

What games are confirmed to appear in the show?

So far, Sony has only two games being featured during the show: Team Ninja’s Rise of the Ronin, and Stellar Blade.

Rise of the Ronin is an upcoming action RPG from the developers behind Ninja Gaiden, Nioh, and the Dead or Alive series. Whether it will continue with the studio’s soulslike trend or lean more into action titles like Assassin’s Creed and Ghost of Tsushima, we hope to find out during this presentation. What we do know is that it already looks incredibly ambitious.

Stellar Blade is a huge unknown, as it is a debut title from a new South Korean studio. Highly ambitious and gorgeous looking, this action game seems to take inspiration from Platinum Games titles like Bayonetta and NieR: Automata with an android protagonist hacking and slashing through biomechanical monstrosities in a far apocalyptic future.

Curiously, we also know that Death Stranding 2 might make an appearance during the event, as Hideo Kojima has been promoting the event through his personal accounts, apparently even mentioning that Kojima Productions will be part of the lineup presented today.

What else could we expect to see?

There have been leaks and rumors about what other games might be present during this State of Play, but other than that we don’t have any confirmation about what else to expect from the show. What we can do, however, is take a look at titles that have still to release, either previously announced, or briefly teased by their respective studios. Take a look at the list:

  • Death Stranding 2
  • Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth
