Xbox speeds ahead in film push with Gears of War movie details and Sea of Thieves adaptation announcement

Microsoft continues expanding its entertainment strategy beyond gaming with new film and TV projects.

Update:

Xbox is at a pivotal moment in its history as a brand. With nearly 25 years under its belt, Microsoft’s gaming division seeks to remain relevant by improving practices that didn’t work under previous leadership, while also facing upcoming challenges within its studios. On the other hand, diversifying its IPs beyond video games could also be a way to continue growing. This has led to some Xbox IPs appearing on TV in recent years, while others have been stuck in “development hell” on their way to the big screen.

Now, as part of an extensive article in Entertainment Weekly, Xbox has revealed its intentions to continue expanding these opportunities and, in the process, has shared details about the upcoming Gears of War movie and announced a Sea of Thieves movie.

From Sera to the Sea of Thieves

According to the article, the Gears of War movie for Netflix, directed by David Leitch and written by Jon Spaihts, will tell “the origin story of Delta Squad, a ragtag crew of soldiers who wage a desperate war for survival against the Locust, a race of subterranean creatures bent on destroying humanity.”

In other news, it was also revealed that Sea of Thieves will be adapted into a live-action film, produced by Destin Daniel Cretton—the current director of Spider-Man: Brand New Day—through his company, Hisako Films. For now, no director has been named. Regarding the story, Matt Booty, Chief Content Officer at Xbox, commented that “the main character of a Sea of Thieves game is actually the player and the community. So if you sit down to think about Sea of Thieves, it’s not, Who are the main characters? What’s the plot? It’s a super social game, but there’s a tone to Sea of Thieves. It’s built on a very cooperative community, so you can start to sense what that’s going to be like.”

Over the years, Xbox’s acquisition of studios has greatly helped expand its portfolio of characters and games that could be adapted for other media. While Halo didn’t quite turn out as originally intended on Paramount+, the brand has enjoyed greater success—both at the box office and with critics—with films like ‘A Minecraft Movie’ and the Fallout series, which is already headed for a third season. Now, a Call of Duty movie is also in the works, with Taylor Sheridan writing the screenplay and Peter Berg directing, set for release in 2028, as well as a Minecraft sequel, A Minecraft Movie Squared, which is already being filmed in New Zealand.
