The Gears of War movie is looking for a director and the top contender has ties to Deadpool and John Wick
The director of Bullet Train and Deadpool 2 might be the one to bring the brutal Xbox franchise to the big screen.

It has been almost three years since Netflix announced that it had bought the rights to make shows and movies based on Gears of War. At the time, it was confirmed that the streaming service would work on a “live action feature film, followed by an adult animated series” based on the popular video game franchise. Since then, there hasn’t been much information. The last update was in November 2023, when it was learned that the project was still being developed. However, with the recent announcement of Gears of War Reloaded, and still waiting for more information on Gears of War: E-Day, we now have news on who might be directing the long-awaited film adaptation.
The Gears of War movie is close to finding a director
Director David Leitch is already in talks to direct the Gears of War movie. Leitch is known for his work on action films such as John Wick (2014, co-directed with Chad Stahelski), Atomic Blonde (2017), Deadpool 2 (2018), Hobbs & Shaw (2019), Bullet Train (2022), and The Fall Guy (2024). He will bring his signature action-packed style to the Gears universe.
Jon Spaihts, who worked with Denis Villeneuve on the movie Dune, will be in charge of the screenplay. Leitch and his wife, Kelly McCormick, will produce the film through their company, 87North Productions. They will work with The Coalition, the studio that is currently responsible for the franchise.
For now, no other details about the project have been shared, and Netflix has not officially commented on it.
Even though it’s still early in the production process, fans are already talking about who will be in the cast. Actor and former wrestler Dave Bautista has said many times that he wants to be in the film. Meanwhile, the original creator of the saga, Cliff Bleszinski, has shown interest in the project. However, he also made a clear request on social networks when the collaboration with Netflix was announced: “keep Chris Pratt away from the Gears franchise, please.”
