‘Yoroiden Samurai Troopers’ returns: A legendary 80s anime gets a sequel after nearly 40 years
The classic samurai action series is making a comeback with a brand-new anime set to premiere in January 2026.

Originally airing between 1988 and 1989, Yoroiden Samurai Troopers, known in the West as Ronin Warriors, was one of the most iconic samurai anime of its era. Now, nearly four decades later, the franchise is returning with an official sequel, titled ‘Yoroi Shinden Samurai Troopers’, set in modern-day Shinjuku.
Who’s behind the new series?
The sequel boasts a top-tier production team, including:
- Yoichi Fujita (Gintama, Osomatsu-san) as director.
- Shogo Muto (Kamen Rider Build) handling the script.
- Hideo Okamoto, the original armor designer, returning to craft the new “Yoroi Gear” designs.
The first teaser trailer showcases a devastated city, fleeing civilians, and a mysterious new threat, culminating in the protagonist Gai’s transformation with the battle cry: “Busō! Shakunetsu!!”.
What to expect from the sequel
Unlike the original series, which followed five warriors battling demonic forces, the new anime introduces a fresh protagonist, Gai, voiced by Hiyori Ishibashi, known for his role in Coco.
The story promises to expand the lore, bringing new characters, modern conflicts, and evolved samurai battles to the forefront.
When does ‘Yoroi Shinden Samurai Troopers’ premiere?
The anime is set to debut in January 2026, though the exact release schedule has yet to be confirmed.
