You won’t hear many jokes in the new Superman: DC reportedly cut some of them after bad reactions

Superman cuts back on jokes about why Krypton’s chicken crossed the street.

The upcoming Superman movie, the pillar on which DC Studios seeks to build its new cinematic universe, continues to generate anticipation and more than a little conjecture. As its July 2025 release date approaches, new reports give us a glimpse of the internal challenges the production has faced, especially with regard to its tone.

Less humor in DC’s future

A recent report from media outlet World of Reel details aspects of the film’s early test screenings, and the early changes that have been made. According to sources close to the production, a recent test screening of the film did not get a unanimous reception, generating what is described as a “mixed reception.” This result is said to have prompted a “cascade of changes” to the film.

The crux of this discussion falls on humor. It is mentioned that the original cut of Superman, under the direction of James Gunn, known for his ability to inject comedy into his previous works, leaned more towards this element. However, after test screenings, several comedic moments were reportedly removed from the footage. This suggests a possible recalibration of the balance between action, drama and humor, a crucial aspect in defining the identity of this new Man of Steel.

The World also notes another interesting move: the removal of one of the film’s mid-process editors. This change, although its exact impact is not detailed, led to a “restructuring” of the film’s narrative. While there is no mention of drastic modifications to the main plot, there is mention of a “slight course correction” in the way the story is being presented. These adjustments, while subtle, are indicative of an ongoing quest to fine-tune the film’s narrative and pacing.

Superman is scheduled for release in U.S. and IMAX theaters on July 11, 2025, distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures.
