Plus vs Game Pass

Sony believes that putting its exclusives on PS Plus on day one would make them lose quality

Sony's CFO addresses the comparison with Xbox Game Pass and assures that, if it were to do the same, its exclusive games would lose quality.

Update:
Sony believes that putting its exclusives on PS Plus on day one would make them lose quality

Now that PlayStation Plus is expanding into three different subscription tiers, many users are wondering why the most expensive of them all doesn't do the same as Xbox Game Pass and include PS5 exclusives on launch day. Hikori Totoki, the company's chief financial officer, answered this question at Q&A session following Sony’s last fiscal year results.

"AAA titles on PlayStation 5, if we distribute them on the subscription service we may need to shrink the investment needed for that," explains Totoki. "That will deteriorate the first-party title quality and that is our concern. So we want to make sure we spend the appropriate development costs to have solid products and titles to be introduced in the right manner."

Interesting statements that bring to mind the words of Phil Spencer, head of Xbox, who has repeatedly assured that its business model is "very, very sustainable". Will Microsoft be investing less in its first-party productions knowing that they will be released on Game Pass and will therefore have fewer sales? Or simply, Microsoft's coffers as a company are able to financially support these types of ventures in terms of new entertainment consumption strategies in the world through subscription models.

PS5 sells less than expected

On another note, during Sony's fiscal results in which Totoki was questioned, the company announced that PS5 has reached 19.3 million units worldwide, 11.5 distributed in the last year. The figures are not bad, but they are far from the target set by the company itself, set at 11.8 million in the previous year. This has had a lot to do with the chip shortage, an essential part in the manufacture of the consoles caused by delays due to the coronavirus and high demand. Unfortunately, the lack of stock will last until 2024, so PlayStation 5 will still take some time to take off.
