The Lord of the Rings: Gollum announces release date, just in time for the series
The new Lord of the Rings game about Gollum will be released in mid-2022 and to coincide with the upcoming Amazon Prime Video series premiere.
Daedalic Entertainment has already confirmed the release date of the expected The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, which will arrive on September 1, 2022 on PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One.
The game will also have a version for Nintendo Switch, but for the moment it is delayed indefinitely. Thus, this new installment of the saga will arrive on consoles just one day before The Rings of Power, the upcoming Prime Video’s The Lord of the Rings series, scheduled for September 2, which first reactions label it as impressive.
What is The Lord of the Rings: Gollum about?
Daedalic's announcement was accompanied by a new plot synopsis: The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, based on the legendary The Lord of the Rings trilogy of books by JRR Tolkien, tells of Gollum's experiences from behind-the-scenes in the first chapters of The Fellowship of the Ring. After losing his precious ring to Bilbo Baggins, Gollum decides to leave the Misty Mountains and embark on a perilous journey that leads him from the dungeons of Barad-dûr to the realm of the Wood-elves in Mirkwood."
"In order to survive the dangers of his journey through Middle-earth,” the note continues, going into what we can expect on a gameplay level, “Gollum has to sneak and climb and use all his cunning. He will also have to deal with his own hobbit: Smeagol. It will be up to the players to let Gollum make the important decisions or let Smeagol take over and do it himself. In addition, throughout the adventure, Gollum will meet familiar characters from the books, as well as some new faces."
For now, The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is not the only title related to the franchise that will be coming to video games. Earlier this month it was announced that Electronic Arts and Middle-earth Enterprises have teamed up to bring The Lord of the Rings: Heroes of Middle-earth, a title that will come to smartphones and its first beta is expected to arrive this summer.
