Update:
Fable has "a lot of cool stuff," but will be shown "until it's ready"

Fable is still on the horizon as one of the next flagship Xbox X Series X|S games. Matt Booty, head of Xbox Game Studios, shares his enthusiasm for the things he's seen internally at Playground Games, but the studio insists he can't show it "until it's ready."

"Part of my job is giving air cover to the team," Booty explains. "They don't want to show stuff early before it's ready to go, but if there's one game where that's kind of flipped around, where every time I see something I say, 'We should show this', it's Fable. Because there's a lot of cool stuff."

Booty stresses that the team has made it "very clear" to him that he won't be able to "show anything until it's ready". The executive also took the opportunity to clarify that Playground Games is investing in the development the same "craft and dedication that they brought to Forza Horizon". "Playground has proven that they get it" this being such a different project compared to the driving saga that catapulted him to fame, they conclude.

What do we know about Fable?

We must go back to July 23, 2020, to learn about the new path taken by the Fable franchise, this time in the hands of a new studio. The creators of Forza Horizon took the step to new horizons that will lead them to weave an open-world RPG. Almost nothing.

We know that the project is only aimed at Xbox Series X|S and PC, which makes it a development dedicated to taking advantage of the capabilities of the new generation. Its trailer left no doubt: we return to the medieval fantasy that Lionhead Studios started, but with a new creative perspective.

"The only thing I can really say about Fable is, seeing the pedigree of the team and Playground, and where they set the bar for themselves in building a game – I think that showed with the Forza Horizon 5 preview that they had – I think people should just take confidence in that [studio director] Gavin [Raeburn] and the team there has that same level of focus on doing something amazing with an IP that we know is really important to a lot of Xbox fans," Phil Spencer said into the microphone on the Dropped Frames podcast in June 2021. No release date is available yet.
