Seven years after the longest game in World Series history, the Dodgers and Blue Jays came close to breaking the record – battling through 18 innings and seven hours and 20 minutes in Game 3 of the 2025 edition. Los Angeles finally prevailed 6–5, thanks to a Freddie Freeman walk-off homer in the bottom of the 18th, ending an unforgettable six-hour, 50-minute epic that will live long in the memory of baseball fans everywhere.

Now the Dodgers hold a 2–1 lead in the Fall Classic and could clinch the Commissioner’s Trophy at home if they take Games 4 and 5. The next matchup is set for 8:00 p.m. ET tomorrow.

A start that seemed endless

Teoscar Hernández drew first blood off Max Scherzer in the second inning, sending one over the left-field wall to put the Blue Jays ahead. Shohei Ohtani responded in the bottom of the third with a solo home run to tie it up.

The joy in Los Angeles didn’t last. Mexican catcher Alejandro Kirk turned the score around with a three-run blast in the fourth, bringing home Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Bo Bichette to make it 3–2 for Toronto. Andrés Giménez then extended the lead with a sacrifice fly that allowed Addison Barger to score from third.

Ohtani and Freeman brought the Dodgers level again at 4–4 in the fifth, each driving in runs to keep their team alive. Bichette added a fifth for Toronto in the seventh with a single to center that sent Guerrero Jr. sprinting home from first. But with the game’s biggest star at the plate, there’s always danger. “Sho-time” launched his eighth postseason homer in the bottom half to tie it once more.

Both sides had chances to break the deadlock in the ninth but came up empty, sending the game into extra innings. In the bottom of the 10th, Davis Schneider tried to score from second but was thrown out at the plate by Will Smith in a dramatic collision. Los Angeles stranded two runners when Tommy Edman popped out in foul territory, and the same fate befell them in the 11th when Freeman flied out to left with Ohtani on second and Mookie Betts on first.

Toronto loaded the bases in the 12th, but veteran Clayton Kershaw climbed the mound and shut them down, forcing a soft grounder to second from Nathan Lukes to escape the jam.

The second-longest World Series game ever

By the 15th inning, the marathon had already earned its place in history as the second-longest World Series game ever. The bullpen carousel continued – the Dodgers used 10 pitchers, the Blue Jays nine, setting a new Fall Classic record with a total of 19.

With two outs in the 17th, Alex Call singled to center and Ohtani walked for the fifth time, but Betts popped out in foul territory to Guerrero Jr., and the stalemate endured.

Finally, in the bottom of the 18th, Freeman stepped up and ended it with a towering solo shot to center. A fitting finale to an extraordinary, once-in-a-lifetime showdown.

The Dodgers and Blue Jays will return to Chavez Ravine on Tuesday for Game 4 of the 2025 World Series. Toronto will send Shane Bieber to the mound, while Los Angeles will counter with none other than Shohei Ohtani – as if this series needed any more drama.
