Where are the Atlanta Braves at right now?
With MLB’s trade deadline now upon us, it goes without saying that we’re about to witness a whole lot of movement. On the other hand, when you’ve got a winning team - reigning MLB champs to be precise - it’s a little different compared with a bottom-of-the-table team. With that in mind, Braves manager Alex Anthopoulos is going to have to think long and hard as to how he goes about augmenting a team that is currently on top, but understandably could do with a little tweaking. Having said that, it’s important to note that we’re not talking about a major overhaul here, but rather a little elbow grease here and there. Let’s get into it:
The Braves should shift Kyle Muller and Cal Conley for Ian Happ
True, we did say nothing big, but if there has to be one big move, then do it right. Ian Happ is basically the definition of what the Braves need right here and now. A left field player who can also handle second base duties if needs be. Add to that, the fact that he’s improved immensely where his strikeout rate was concerned and you’ve got yourself a player who can move between bases, while also providing a decent share of speed and power at the plate.
Alan Rangel OR Braden Shewmake for Noah Syndergaard could also pay dividends
‘Show me the money,’ will likely be the cry in this one as any negotiation will depend almost entirely on how much cash the Angels can include in the deal, that’s assuming they have it to include. There will of course, be those who point to Noah Syndergaard’s lack of speed, but it would be rude and more over dishonest, to not acknowledge the fact that he’s a dependable middle-of-rotation player. If you put that kind of player on a team that has good defense, his grit will certainly take care of the rest.
Justin Dean for David Peralta hinges on Happ but it’s worth it
As sated above, this one will be dependent on the idea that they can get Happ on the roster. Another lefty on the bench such as David Peralta can only be a good thing for Atlanta. If there was one criticism that could be leveled at the champions in the last campaign, it was a lack of depth. A player like Peralta would bring just that.
Tanner Gordon for Michael Fulmer could do the trick
While it’s true, that fan favorite Kirby Yates could well return to his best one more time with his impressive arm, the
reality is having some back up never hurts. That’s exactly where Fulmer comes in. Already experienced in operating from the back of the bullpen, Michael Fulmer is exactly the kind of guy you want on the mound for those crucial middle-to-late innings. The way we see the situation, it’s a win-win for both parties involved. With all of this said, these are simply speculative ideas as to how the Braves can improve. Ultimately, Atlanta will have to think long and hard - not too long - before making any changes to a team that’s currently champions.
